BMW 2 Series spied

The all-new BMW 2 Series Convertible has been spotted testing ahead of its debut late next year

BMW’s new naming convention is as simple as filling in the gaps. So just as Coupe and Convertible versions of the 3 Series will become 4 Series models, the Coupe and Convertible 1 Series will be badged 2 Series.

Our spies have caught the 2 Series Convertible on the road – and through the heavy disguise, it looks as though it’ll get the same sporty styling updates as the 4 Series.

The 2 Series is due to debut officially at the end of next year with the same engines as the hatchback on which it’s based, including a 1.6-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel. There will also be a high-performance 235i and a hot M2.

The new naming strategy will also extend into BMW’s SUVs. The company is expected to release an X4 model that’s based on the X3 but has more of a coupe-like profile. Think along the lines of the X5-based X6, with a similar increase in price. BMW may also have a small X2 crossover in the pipeline.
