Vettel made an incredibly strong start, and had built up a five-second lead after just eight laps.

Just behind him was Raikkonen who, having started from 11th on the grid, had worked his way up to third place after 10 laps. He overtook his young teammate on lap 24 but failed to take the lead, allowing Vettel his first win of 2012.

Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg finished fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of Paul di Resta who drove a two-stop race to finish in sixth place after a last-minute pass by Rosberg on fresher tyres.

McLaren's Jenson Button was also poised to overtake di Resta when a puncture forced him to pit with just three laps to go. He finished the race in 18th place.

This result means that Sebastian Vettel leads the drivers' championship with 53 points, ahead of Hamilton – who finished eighth in Bahrain after a botched pit stop – and Webber, with 49 and 48 points respectively.

Red Bull now leads the constructors' championship with 101 points to McLaren's 92. Lotus is third with 57 points, ahead of Ferrari with 45.
