Lightweight MX-5 blasts in

Stripped-out Mazda does without a windscreen, and benefits from minimalist interior to help keep the weight down

Mazda is taking the wraps off its wildest MX-5 ever.

Debuting at Frankfurt, the 1,000kg Superlight demonstrates how weight saving will be important for future models from the firm.

There’s no air-con, windscreen, door handles or side windows.

Power comes from Mazda’s 125bhp 1.8-litre petrol engine, which propels the Superlight from 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds.

Yet it still promises 45mpg. While this is a driveable example, the firm says it’s not going into production.
