Volvo XC90

It’s here to stay in the off-road 4x4 category! It might be more than four years old but the XC90 is still the must-have
off-roader. If anything, its lower-than-ever used prices and wider availability have strengthened its case as a second-hand winner again this year.

The market for large 4x4s is coming under pressure from tax hikes and parking restrictions which have been imposed by national and local governments. The net result is slowing demand and cheaper motors available for second-hand buyers, although premium models such as the Volvo are not as badly affected as mainstream machines.

With its flexible seven-seat interior, classy looks and sensible image, a XC90 will always be easy to sell on – but you need to buy carefully in the first place.

That means avoiding the 272bhp 2.9-litre turbocharged petrol model or the post-2004 210bhp 2.5-litre turbo, and setting your sights on the more frugal D5 diesel. The oil-burner has 163bhp and can hit 25mpg, which makes it the best all-rounder. Admittedly, the Volvo isn’t at the front of the class when it comes down to ultimate off-road duties, but it can handle moderate terrain without problems and it makes an excellent tow car.

Other plus points include a top Euro NCAP rating and the marque’s reputation for dealer service and reliability, which combine to make the XC90 a desirable used car that’s also a sensible buy. However, check out the chrome window trim. Cleaning chemicals can damage this, and replacement is the only answer.

Commended: Land Rover Discovery 3

2005 to present

Few cars at any price can rival the Land Rover’s versatility. Not only do you get seven full-sized seats, but the Discovery 3 is virtually unstoppable off-road. On tarmac, the refinement is impressive, while its desirability is first-rate. Expensive to buy but brilliant, the 2.7-litre diesel is the only realistic option, although it can be thirsty.

2003 to present

Big, luxurious and excellent value for money when bought second-hand, the huge VW is an extremely capable off-roader. Compared with the Land Rover Discovery 3, there’s a bigger range of engines and the V10 diesel provides unbelievable, if thirsty, pace. The Volkswagen is the only five-seater in our final list of three, but its cabin is as luxurious as it is spacious and there’s also a massive 555-litre boot.
