Lamborghini Aventador S revealed for 2017 with 730bhp

Italian supercar brand has facelifted its halo model with a tweaked V12 engine and aero

The new Lamborghini Aventador S has been revealed in full, ahead of its dynamic debut in 2017. It will replace the existing Aventador and sit below the Aventador SV, boasting 730bhp from its 6.5-litre V12 engine. The focus is on aerodynamic performance, also adding a new four-wheel steering system for improved agility.

Previously teased by a 40-second video clip, the new Aventador S model is “characterised by new aerodynamic design, redeveloped suspension, increased power and new driving dynamics”. The ’S’ badge is carried over from previous Lambos and allegedly defines a new benchmark for the brand’s flagship V12.

At first glance the S looks very similar to the outgoing model, but look closer and you’ll notice a longer front splitter designed to redirect airflow for improved aerodynamics and cooling. Two ducts in the front bumper reduce buffeting around the front wheels and optimise flow to the rear.

At the back there’s a new black diffuser, reducing drag and generating downforce. A huge central exhaust with three pipes dominate the rear, with recognisable LED lights and the usual slatted screen. There’s an active rear wing, too. Lamborghini claims the changes improve front downforce by 130 per cent, while high-speed efficiency is up for 50 per cent.

Not content. Lamborghini has overhauled the Aventador’s electronics, with an improved ESC system designed to offer more control over the car’s traction control and vehicle dynamics. Bosses say is offers maximum grip in all conditions, with specially calibrated four-wheel-drive to allow more power and torque to the rear axle to deliver a “sporty but safe drive”.

Customisable driving modes also feature, offering owners the usual STRADA, SPORT and CORSA settings, as well as a new EGO mode. Essentially an individual setting, the driver can set their preferred criteria for traction control, steering and suspension. Settings for the engine and gearbox are also customisable.

The S will sprint from 0-62mph in an identical 2.9 seconds and hit 217mph flat out. The seven-speed automatic gearbox remains, and can shift cogs in just 50 milliseconds. As before, the Aventador S boasts stop-start tech and cylinder deactivation, the extra power has resulted in a slightly higher CO2 figure of 394g/km. The previous car emitted a still alarming 370g/km.

It’s on sale now priced from £225,955 (before tax) - hinting at a price upwards of £270,000. We expect a Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster to arrive in due course, probably some time towards the end of 2017.

Will the Aventador S be one of the best supercars of 2017? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
