Revised Mazda CX-5 crossover launched for 2021

The updated Mazda CX-5 gets a larger displacement version of the brand’s SkyActiv-G petrol engine and a fresh infotainment system

Mazda has launched an updated version of the CX-5, with the Japanese firm expanding the SUV’s engine line-up and adding an improved infotainment system in an effort to keep it competitive with the likes of the Skoda Karoq, Volkswagen Tiguan and Honda CR-V.

The CX-5 can now be specced with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder version of Mazda’s SkyActiv-G petrol engine. The unit produces 191bhp and 258Nm of torque, which gives the crossover a 0–62mph time of 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 121mph. The powertrain is only available on the range-topping GT Sport model, with prices starting from £36,860.

Like Mazda’s entry-level 2.0-litre petrol engine, this new 2.5-litre unit also features cylinder deactivation, which can shut down two of the engine’s four-cylinders when cruising. As a result, the larger engine has a claimed fuel economy figure of 35.3mpg – or around seven per cent less than the smaller displacement unit.

Mazda has also expanded the CX-5’s diesel line-up. The flagship 181bhp 2.2-litre model is now available with front-wheel drive, while the outgoing CX-5 could only have the engine with four-wheel drive. However, prices for the new powertrain are yet to be confirmed.

Every version of the CX-5 also now benefits from an improved infotainment system. The outgoing car’s eight-inch screen has been ditched in favour of a larger 10.25-inch unit, which Mazda says is both faster and clearer. As part of the upgrade, the crossover also gets a remote door locking function, a vehicle tracker and remote sat-nav programming.

Finally, Mazda has launched a new, special edition version of the CX-5, called the Kuro Edition. Prices start from £29,630, for which buyers get a set of black 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, rear privacy glass, all-round parking sensors, a power assisted tailgate and a choice of two metallic paint finishes – either Soul Red Crystal or Polymetal Grey.

Inside, the Kuro Edition receives an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a leather sports steering wheel and Mazda’s updated 10.25-inch infotainment system. The seats and door cars are also trimmed in a blend of black leatherette and suede – and all of the interior upholstery features contrasting red stitching.

Production of the new CX-5 Kuro Edition will be limited to just 750 examples – and every model will be fitted with Mazda’s 163bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. However, buyers can choose from either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox, with the latter option commanding a £1,600 premium.
