Limited-run Mazda MX-5 Icon revealed at Goodwood 2016
New Mazda MX-5 Icon special edition sits alongside hardtop MX-5 RF and concept cars at Mazda's Goodwood stand
Mazda has revealed a new special edition of its new MX-5 roadster, named the Mazda MX-5 Icon, at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Just 600 of the limited-run Icon models will be made, and they will go on sale on 1st August, priced at £20,995.
The MX-5 Icon is based on the mid-range SE-L specification with the 129bhp, 1.5-litre petrol engine, so you get kit like cruise control, Bluetooth, DAB radio and LED daytime running lights as standard. Icon adds 16-inch Gunmetal alloys, black leather seats, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and automatic wipers.
What makes the Icon really stand out, though, are the touches of Soul Red detailing; the door mirrors, rear spoiler and front skirt are all painted in Mazda’s classic paint colour. If you put your name forward for one when it goes on sale on 1st August, you can have it in either a Meteor Grey Mica or Crystal White Pearlescent paint finish.
The Icon special edition will be part of Mazda’s stand at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which will also play host to the all-new MX-5 RF hardtop version and the Speedster and Spyder concept cars first seen at the 2015 SEMA show in the US.
This isn’t the first time the Icon tag has been used on the MX-5 – in fact; the Icon special edition has become a stalwart special edition for Mazda’s little roadster. The Icon name has been slapped on all three of the previous-generation MX-5 cars, in 2000, 2005 and 2007.
