Renault to expand over coming years
New Twingo set for unveiled at Geneva Motor Show 2014, plus new crossover planned
Britain may not be getting the next-generation Renault Espace, but there’s still plenty of new Renaults coming next year, including the new Twingo, new Megane and a Qashqai-based SUV codenamed C-Cross.
Speaking at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Renault senior vice president of design Laurens van den Acker explained what to expect from the new SUV: “We have to be very careful when using the curves from the Captur because making a bigger car like that can make it look dumpy”. Instead, the car will borrow cues from throughout van den Acker’s recent concepts, including the bold face of the Initiale Paris on show in Frankfurt.
Renault’s SUV expansion isn’t set to end with the new C-Cross, either, as van dan Acker revealed that Renault is working on “a whole range of SUVs”. We already know the next Espace will be an MPV/SUV crossover, but there’s also the possibility of a Twingo-based off-roader to rival the forthcoming Volkswagen Taigun.
The Twingo will be the first to arrive. Renault CEO confirmed the new supermini is on-track for launch at next year's Geneva Motor Show, and will go on sale in the middle of 2014, with the new Megane and Qashqai-based SUV arriving much later in the year.
Renault has only just facelifted the Megane at this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show but van den Acker explained that “this class is so competitive that we had to keep the Megane updated.”
