New Volkswagen Grand California revealed in full
The new Volkswagen Grand California camper has been revealed ahead of its public debut at the Dusseldorf Caravan Salon
Volkswagen has revealed the production-ready 'California XXL' and confirmed the name, too. The Crafter-based camper will be called the VW Grand California, slotting in above the existing California Beach and California Ocean models.
The Volkwagen Grand California will make its public debut at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf later this month. The show runs from 24 August to 2 September, and will offer potential punters a chance to get a proper look at the production van before it goes on sale in 2019.
The extra-large campervan takes inspiration from the original Bulli camper, although at nearly six-metres long and close to three metres tall, it dwarfs its 1960s ancestor. As a result, it's far bigger than the standard California, which is based on the smaller T6 Transporter van.
The Grand California takes its chassis from the medium-wheelbase Crafter, but the raised roof means it's easy to stand upright inside. There's room for a double bed in the back, while another alcove above the cab makes room for kids to sleep and play. The large skylights create a bright and airy interior.
But there's far more to the Grand California than just room for a big bed or two. There's a kitchen and a large (840mm x 840mm) bathroom with a toilet and shower, as well as external lighting and an electrically-powered step to make getting in and out easier. There's a two-part mosquito net and a Bluetooth sound system, as well as swivel chairs and a large dining table.
As VW's range-topping camper, the kitchen is predictably well-equipped. There's a pull-out 70-litre fridge with a freezer compartment, a twin-hob gas cooker, a sink, and numerous drawers and storage areas.
Buyers can spec an optional bunk bed, as well as an additional roof-mounted air-conditioning unit. The extras list extends further than that, however, with customers given the choice of bike racks, awnings, camping chairs and solar panels. In addition, it can even be specced with a satellite dish or a WiFi router.
Volkswagen has confirmed the Grand California will be available with a choice of single or two-tone paint options, as well as 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Under the skin, the California XXL concept featured the 2.0 TDI 177PS version of the Crafter's diesel engine, but it's currently unclear which units will be offered in the production Grand California van. More information and initial pricing will be revealed at the Caravan Salon later this month.
