Welcome to our showdown of three new SUVs: the SEAT Arona vs Citroen C3 Aircross vs Kia Stonic.

As the UK new car market has become flooded with compact SUVs, each of the contenders will be looking to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

The SEAT Arona tested is in sporty FR trim, with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The Arona costs (as tested) £19,895, returns 41.4mpg, costs £140 a year to tax and has CO2 emissions of 113g/km.

The Citroen C3 Aircross takes the mantle from the C4 Cactus as the marque’s funky crossover, as the larger C4 has been repositioned as a more conventional hatchback.

As tested, the Citroen C3 Aircross cost £18,000, runs a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine producing 108bhp. It manages to reach 60mph from a standstill in 10.6 seconds, costs £140 a year to tax, and has CO2 emissions of 115g/km.

The Kia Stonic, is the Korean marque’s new entry into the compact SUV class, and it more than looks at home in the segment.

The Stonic on test costs £19,695, uses a 1.0-litre three-cylinder producing 118bhp and will get to 60mph from a standstill in 10.4 seconds. Also, it costs £140 a year to tax, returns 38.7mpg and emits 115g/km of CO2.
