Mega Drive: We do one month of miles... in a day - pictures

<p class="p1">New Astra faces its ultimate test as we try to take it to four corners of the UK on a single tank in 24 hours</p>

<p class="p1">The journey in the Astra would began at Vauxhall HQ in Luton and ended at Belfast’s Windsor Park, 798 miles and 24 hours later.</p>

<p class="p1">Thirty miles in, and with our shots of the Astra with the stadium’s arch in the bag, we were ahead of schedule.</p>

The journey from London to Cardiff was marred by a crawl through West London, but the empty M40 helped the Astra eat up the miles.

<p class="p1">We hit an incident around Swindon in Wiltshire. It led to severe tailbacks and added 40 minutes to our journey.</p>

<p class="p1">The Ellesmere Port pitstop also gave us a chance to refill the doughnut stash and collect another caffeine fix.</p>

<p class="p1">Back on the motorway, and the trip computer was pretty much on the money.</p>

<p class="p1">404 miles in – we’d averaged 57.4mpg so far.</p>

<p class="p1">The driving position is almost perfect, with comfortable and supportive seats.</p>

<p class="p1">Apple CarPlay provides access to all of your smartphone’s key functions, while the on-board Wi-Fi is fast enough to download an Attenborough documentary on the move.</p>

<p class="p1">The Astra’s in-car Wi-Fi and new <span class="s1">OnStar</span> concierge service can help you find anything from Swansea’s finest steakhouse to Croydon’s best car wash.</p>

<p class="p1">A little over 14 hours in and Hampden Park welcomed us with sub-zero temperatures and an icy darkness.</p>

<p class="p1">The chase down to Cairnryan in Dumfries and Galloway to catch the ferry was on, aided by copious amounts of caffiene.</p>

<p class="p1">With help from the Astra's OnStar system, we made it to Windsor Park stadium with 30 minutes to spare.</p>

<p class="p1">While the car wouldn’t have flinched had it needed to make the return journey immediately, we knew we couldn’t.</p>
