You don’t need shampoo to clean your car, according to E-cloth. The company says its new Auto range of cloths will shift grime with water alone. We put the general purpose and glass polishing cloths to the test.
We sprayed on a liberal amount of water and rubbed the green general purpose cloth down our car’s dirty panel once, then folded it over and wiped again to dry the panel. This cloth is a bit small, at 32cm square. It’s a bit more towel-like than the glass polishing cloth, so is our choice for lifting stubborn dirt, but you’ll need to use a lot of water and tackle the affected area at least three times, as our single wipe hardly removed any dirt. In fact, all it really cleared was dust, and we found tiny scratches where the cloth had dragged dirt across our panel.
We got much the same result when we tried to clean our windscreen with the glass cloth. Water obviously doesn’t have the same cleaning power as a dedicated screenwash, so using the cloth required more effort. It smeared a bit, too.
The E-cloths are machine-washable and well priced, but we’re not convinced about their claims. You really need a cleaner to shift grime.
Verdict
Rating: ★★
What is it?
Range of cloths that shift grime without the need for shampoo.
What's good?
Cheap, large cloths mean there’s plenty of space for you to fold over, machine washable.
What's bad?
Fibres not long enough to prevent scratches, you’ll struggle to shift serious muck, cloth and water no substitute for a full wash.
