Contour GPS video camera
Former test winner gets resolution upgrade and a location chip.
Price: £329.99
Contour won our 2010 group test (here) with its 720p HD camcorder. Now, the firm is back, with a new camera with 1080p high definition video and a GPS chip to help you relive your favourite drives with video and audio footage, plus speed and location data.
The original Contour HD video camera won our Issue 1,111 test, and the new unit builds on that success, adding 1080p resolution and GPS functionality. The only physical difference is the bigger record switch. You still get a 2GB Micro SD card – this can record half an hour’s 1080p footage, and can be expanded to 32GB.
To use the data logging and Bluetooth functionality, you’ll need a Connect View Card. But this, the windscreen mount and car charger all cost extra.
The new camera performs well, though. It’s shock resistant, waterproof and the suction-cup mount can be stuck on to glass or bodywork. We chose to mount it inside, where the wide-angle lens reacted well to light changes.
Adjusting the aim is simple, and we were impressed with our uploaded footage. The Awesome function also allows you to mark a notable section of the recording and share it. However, you’ll need to use separate software to edit your clip.
See below for some of our test footage.
