Shift 2: Unleashed video game
Latest video game has improved handling and driving features to make it even more involving
Price: £49.99 (PS3)
The latest game from the makers of the Need For Speed series blurs the boundaries between arcade fun and realistic simulator. We tried Shift 2: Unleashed on a Sony PlayStation 3, but it’s also available on Xbox 360 and PC.
The graphics are great – the 145 licensed cars are detailed, and viewing options include a clever cockpit mode. This gives a driver’s-eye view of the real-life tracks, shaking the camera as per your racer’s helmet.
It took us a while to get used to the way the camera focuses on the apex but, with practice, it’s a help rather than a hindrance.
You race your way through 16 levels of difficulty, and can customise the performance and looks of the cars you buy. Be warned, though: certain upgrades can make your car ineligible for lower level races.
Our favourite feature on Shift 2 is the crash damage. Every impact results in accurate debris, from flaking paint to wheels being torn off in the heaviest impacts.
Online play is available, with frequent reminders to challenge your friends. We’d have liked a split-screen multiplayer mode, but this is still a brilliant game.
