Janus V2 Camera
Price: £299 (excluding VAT) Rating: 3/5
As car insurance costs spiral, we’re all looking at ways to cut the price of our premiums. And that’s exactly what the Janus V2 In-Car camera promises to do.
It keeps a visual and factual record of every journey – from inside and outside the car. That way, in the event of an accident, you can recall the speed and location, as well as who was behind the wheel – and your cover provider can see who was at fault.
The best discount we negotiated as a result of fitting the Janus was five per cent, although it’s still new.
On installing the camera, the first thing we noticed was that the mount wasn’t movable. The supplied cradle sticks to the inside of your windscreen using super-strong 3M tape, and didn’t vibrate during our test.
But we couldn’t shift it from left to right, which was irritating.
The camera comes with a 2GB memory card and a reader, and you can upgrade to 4GB for more recording time.
The key to systems like this is the software – and it impressed.
We downloaded our footage, and the route was plotted on Google maps.
There was a detailed account of our journey, speed and where we braked. Had we crashed, the impact would also have been recorded.
But the Janus isn’t compatible with Apple Macs.
