Piaggio MP3 LT 400 scooter

Price: £6,499

You can forget compulsory basic training and complicated motorcycle licences with the latest Piaggio. Although the MP3 LT looks like a scooter, as far as the law is concerned it is a car – so drivers can ride this 400cc machine without having to go through the complex training and testing involved in using bikes of more than 125cc.

At launch in 2007, the MP3 shook up the market with its unique, tilting, twin-wheel front suspension. But the LT features a slightly wider track, bringing it in line legally with trikes and three-wheeled cars. This allows drivers to cut their commuting times and costs without the need to spend on bike tests.

At £6,499, it’s £1,208 more than the standard MP3 400cc, but rider training is included. The LT has the regular MP3’s huge underseat storage area, twist-and-go transmission and lively single-cylinder four-stroke engine. It’s due in dealers later this summer.

 * Maker’s claim: “It’s a revolution for drivers wanting to cut their commuting times and costs, as the MP3 LT is the first 125cc-plus scooter that can be legally ridden with a normal car licence.”
