Design Award 2019: Alfa Romeo Tonale
We asked you what your favourite car design is for 2019, and the Alfa Romeo Tonale has taken the crown
Alfa Romeo has a rich history when it comes to arrestingly attractive concept cars – and it wowed crowds earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show with the release of its Tonale SUV concept.
Our readers voted it the best piece of automotive design over the past year, and it’s clear the Tonale moves the Italian brand’s design language on another step, looking to the future to define what a compact Alfa Romeo SUV should look like. The shield grille is Alfa’s main design cue, while the smooth bonnet that overflies the narrow LED headlights pays homage to the brand’s SZ sports car. The sleek rear tapers to a point and the swaged body surfaces give plenty of visual tension.
It’s an evolution of Alfa’s current SUV, the Stelvio, with the Tonale slated to slot into the range beneath the mid-size model when it makes production.
Inside, it’s the same story. The Tonale concept’s cabin is driver-focused, with supportive, sporty-looking seats and minimalist details, and the climate controls have been moved to the air vents for a cleaner look. Let’s hope that these features make production on an Alfa soon.
