George Armitage Q&A…

Q: What was your first car?
A: My first car was an Alfa Romeo 156 1.6. I bought it sight unseen on eBay for £400, and it turned out to be an absolute nightmare. It lasted just four months before everything fell apart, and in the end, the engine and brakes simultaneously failed which meant that I had to run it into a tree to stop it. Not the best start to car ownership!

Q: What is your dream car?
A: It's a tough one, but if I had to choose, an affordable dream car would be the Jaguar F-Type V6S with a manual gearbox. I drove one at an event in Majorca, and the sound was just incredible. A slightly less realistic dream car would be the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 with a manual. It’s got perfect balance and a seriously addictive engine; I could happily own one of those and never look at another car. But, if I’m dreaming big, the 1950s Mercedes-Benz 300SL with gullwing doors is a car I have been dreaming about since I was a child and is still one of the most beautiful and iconic cars ever made – it’s the stuff of legend.

Q: If you could change one thing about cars, driving, or the car industry today, what would it be?
A: I’d love to see more manufacturers focusing on building cars for driving enthusiasts. Right now, fewer companies are making lightweight, simple sports cars with a manual gearbox. Instead, it’s all about cramming-in new tech and gadgets. What I’d love to see is more cars that focus on the basics – lightweight, fun to drive, and designed to make you smile behind the wheel
