Disney-themed road signs designed to teach children about safety

Special edition road signs featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck are available to download online

A new set of road signs featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck have been unveiled to teach children about road safety.

Britain’s official road sign designer, Margaret Calvert OBE, created the special edition signs as part of a new initiative between Disney Junior and road safety charity Brake.

It is hoped that the signs, which can be downloaded from the Brake website, will help parents and teachers educate children on the rules of the road, as well as encourage schools and nurseries to make their own road safety messages.

The signs are being released alongside new interactive road safety guides, featuring six Disney characters, which aim to teach two to seven-year-olds about the basics of road safety.

Of 1,000 drivers with children aged two to seven who took part in a survey, 82 per cent said they were concerned about the speed of cars around their children, with 38 per cent saying it’s too dangerous to walk their children to school.

Some 35 per cent admitted they were worried that their children don’t know the basics of Stop, Look, Listen and Think, with 71 per cent concerned their children may run out into the road.

The data also suggested there was a lack of knowledge among parents, with 83 per cent not being able to identify common signs from the Highway Code, while 53 per cent of them were unable to identify a pelican crossing and 48 per cent did not know the speed limit around nearby schools.

Dave Nichols, community engagement manager at Brake, said: “Our vision is a world where all children can enjoy safe and healthy journeys, which is why we’re always working to improve the safety and welfare of children on UK roads.”
