Romain Grosjean made contact with Fernando Alonso on his right, before colliding with Michael Schumacher on his left. The Frenchman spun, collecting a few cars behind him in the process.

Pastor Maldonado was the worst affected, with severe damage to the front of his car, which forced him to stop on track and the safety car to be deployed. Kamui Kobayashi and Pedro de la Rosa were also forced to retire.

The remainder of the race was rather processional, with no real battle for the lead. Rain was expected but the worst was a little light rain towards the end of the 78-lap race.

Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso joined Webber on the podium, taking second and third place respectively.

Sebastian Vettel finished fourth for Red Bull, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa. Seventh went to Paul di Resta, who finished just ahead of his teammate Nico Hulkenberg. Kimi Raikkonen and Bruno Senna took the final few points of the day.

Michael Schumacher - who was fastest of all in qualifying and would have been on pole were it not for a five-place grid penalty - retired on lap 65 with a problem.

Heikki Kovalainen managed to hold off Jenson Button for most of the race, and looked set to provide Lotus with its best result yet. They touched with just a few laps to go, causing Button to spin out of the race. Kovalainen pitted and finished the race 13th.

Kovalainen's teammate Vitaly Petrov retired on lap 17 due to an electrical problem. Charles Pic and Daniel Ricciardo also retired with only a few laps to go.

This result means that Alonso leads the drivers' championship with 76 points ahead of Vettel and Webber with 73 points each.

Red Bull leads the constructors' championship with 146 points, ahead of McLaren with 108.
