Vettel wins in Singapore
Sebastian Vettel wins the Singapore Grand Prix, after Lewis Hamilton is forced to retire from the race
Sebastian Vettel is celebrating his second victory of the season, following a win in the Singapore Grand Prix.
The reigning world champion dedicated his win to Professor Sid Watkins, who died earlier this month.
Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton was first into turn one, ahead of Pastor Maldonado and Sebastian Vettel. But the Williams driver - who had pulled off a stunning lap in Q3 to qualify second on the grid - couldn't match the speeds of the Red Bull or the Mclaren of Jenson Button, and ended the lap fourth.
Meanwhile, Hamilton and Vettel were setting a succession of fastest laps and, by lap 10, Hamilton had extended his lead to 2.7 seconds and victory looked set to be his.
But just 13 laps later, his race was brought to an early end when his gearbox failed. He pulled off onto an escape road as smoke billowed from the back of his car, allowing Vettel to take the lead.
A series of retirements followed. Narain Karthikeyan clouted the barriers on lap 33, losing the front-right wheel of his HRT and bringing out the safety car. Maldonado was told to pit with a hydraulic problem on lap 36, before Michael Schumacher ploughed into the back of Jean-Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso causing the safety car to come out again. The stewards have since handed Schumacher a 10-place grid penalty for the next race at Suzuka.
The race was cut short after 59 laps when the race hit the two-hour limit. Vettel crossed the line 8.9 seconds ahead of second-place Jenson Button, who had come close to hitting the back of Vettel's car earlier in the race.
Championship leader Fernando Alonso finished third, ahead of Paul di Resta and Nico Rosberg.
Kimi Raikkonen came home in sixth, ahead of Romain Grosjean. The Frenchman had allowed his teammate through on lap 48, following a message on the team radio that said: "Kimi is quicker, do not hold him up."
Felipe Massa - who had an appalling first lap, at the end of which he was forced to pit from last place with a puncture, before having a near miss with Bruno Senna on lap 43 - finished eighth. Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez took the final few points.
Mark Webber finished 10th but has been handed a drive-through penalty for going off the track while overtaking Kamui Kobayashi. As the decision was made after the race had ended, it becomes a 20-second penalty and demotes Webber to 11th.
Marussia's Timo Glock finished an impressive 12th, ahead of Kobayashi and Nico Hulkenberg, who finished 13th and 14th respectively, despite a collision which left Hulkenberg with a puncture and Kobayashi needing a new nose.
Senna was running in 12th when he was forced to stop in the closing stages of the race. His engineer said: "Jump out of the car. It could be a KERS problem. Do not touch the ground at the same time. The car is unsafe."
This result means that Alonso still leads the drivers' championship with 194 points, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen with 165 and 149 points respectively.
In the constructors' championship, Red Bull has 297 points, while McLaren has 261.
