Audi TT Sportback concept images leaked
Family-friendly five-door TT leaks ahead of suspected Paris motor show debut
Images purporting to be official design sketches of a five-door Audi TT Sportback concept car have leaked on the internet. It’s understood Audi was planning to shock the 2014 Paris Motor Show with the arrival of a rakish TT Sportback, hinting at future expansion of the TT line-up.
The TT ‘Sportback’ appears to have the same angular front and rear bumper design as the Audi TT 420 Sport Quattro concept car which we first saw at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. However, what appears to be a longer wheelbase, shallower roofline sweep and of course four pillarless doors give the stubby TT a more svelte look than ever before.
Audi chairman Rupert Stadler has previously said that the latest Mk3 TT will spawn at least three bodystyles, rather than just a coupe and roadster as before. The Beijing Motor Show saw the debut of the TT Offroad concept, which previewed a five-door, crossover-spec TT, and garnered a hugely positive reaction. Speculation has also suggested Audi would finally get around to building a TT Shooting Brake, an idea first floated back in 2005.
Because the current TT sits on the VW Group’s MQB modular platform, creating a longer Sportback variant, or a tall-riding crossover, is relatively straightforward. The architecture already forms the basis for five-door models like the Audi A3 Sportback and VW Passat, and will also underpin VW’s next Tiguan SUV.
If a TT Sportback dopes get the green light, expect to see it use the same all-turbo engines as the regular TT and be priced higher than the ‘five-door coupe’ Audi A5 Sportback in the Ingolstadt firm’s range.
