Peugeot BB1
Verdict on Peugeot’s scooter-style electric BB1
With an exciting design, space for four and zero emissions, the BB1 is the perfect city runaround. The quirky design should ensure it appeals to fashion-conscious and eco-minded buyers alike.
Peugeot’s electric future isn’t just about models like the HR1 hybrid SUV and battery-powered EX1 supercar. The firm is also readying a new zero-emissions urban runabout, and Auto Express has got behind the wheel – well, the handlebars!

The BB1 is inspired as much by scooters as cars. Sit in the driver’s seat, and you’re also greeted by a twist-and-go throttle and hand-operated brake lever.
Access is through a rear-hinged door. The front seats fold flat, so rear occupants step over them, before wrapping their legs round the driver (or passenger).
The BB1 is powered by two 10bhp electric motors – one in each rear wheel. It doesn’t sound much, but the featherweight 600kg carbon fibre body means impressive performance at low speeds. A twist of the throttle propels the Peugeot from 0-30mph in around five seconds, while top speed is 65mph.
On the move, the ride is a bit bumpy and the steering inconsistent, so placing the car on the road is hard. But remember, it’s still a concept. A production BB1 based on the iOn is already on the drawing board and, having spoken to the designer, we’re promised it will be similarly individual.
