BEST SUPERMINI MPV: Nissan Note
Here’s the proof that small cars are big news for young families on the move. The supermini-MPV sector was added to the
New Car Honours category list in 2006, and the number of contenders has gone through the roof ever since.
Despite more and more manufacturers seeing the benefits of merging the best bits of a supermini and a people carrier, it’s Nissan’s Note which tops the class. It’s the perfect example of a car that’s been designed around the people who depend on it most. It has all the space a family needs, and is a breeze to drive, thanks to its light controls and easy manoeuvrability.
Both petrol and diesel variants offer strong efficiency, too, helping to keep costs down. When Auto Express tested one for a year on our long-term fleet, it spent most of its time tackling the mean streets of London, yet it never missed a beat, and proved frugal to run.
So far the model that has come closest to matching the Nissan’s abilities is the Skoda Roomster, but there’s a serious new contender just around the corner. The Note’s Japanese arch-rival, the Honda Jazz, created the supermini-MPV sector when it was launched. Even today it’s tough to beat, and an all-new version is due on sale this autumn. Will it match the Note, or will it tackle the mainstream supermini class instead? We can’t wait to find out.
