Citroen C3 1.6 16v HDi Airdream+
Price: £14,790, CO2 emissions: 99g/km
Fuel-sipping four-seaters are something of a Citroen speciality – and now, the firm’s C3 Airdream+ supermini gives sub- 100g/km CO2 emissions and nearly 75mpg. Yet unlike most rivals, it doesn’t rely on hi-tech stop/start or regenerative braking to achieve its eco-warrior status.
Even the exterior looks standard, with aerodynamic tweaks limited to flush plastic trims for the 15-inch steel rims. The same panoramic windscreen as the range-topper gives the cabin an airy feel, and parking sensors, Bluetooth and air-con are included. However, we’d like to see the £300 electronic stability control option fitted as standard. The 1.6-litre HDi gets a diesel particulate filter, and energy-saving tyres boost the green credentials, but otherwise the car is mechanically identical to other C3s.
It feels just as good to drive, too, with strong mid-range pace and a chassis that’s been set up for comfort rather than razor-sharp responses. Adding to the car’s appeal is its £14,790 price tag, which undercuts the dynamically compromised and sparsely equipped VW Polo BlueMotion by £255.
