Ford Fiesta Econetic 1.6 TDCi DPF

Price: £15,445, CO2 emissions: 98g/km

Few cars can match this Fiesta for guilt-free fun, thanks to a zero-compromise drive and great running costs. And, as with the C3, it doesn’t need complicated kit to achieve its 76.3mpg economy and 98g/km CO2 emissions.

An aerodynamic bodykit and lowered stance let it slip more easily through the air, longer gear ratios reduce revs and a dash-mounted shift indicator helps eco driving. Even better, the ECOnetic looks just as good as a standard car, even on its 14-inch steel wheels and plastic trims. Inside, there’s the same bold dash and spacious cabin, and vital kit such as air-con and ESP is included. The wonderfully entertaining driving experience comes as standard, too.

Sharp steering, light-footed agility and excellent body control combine to make the Fiesta huge fun through corners. When you want to relax, then the torquey powerplant and supple ride turn it into a cosseting long-distance tourer. At £15,445 the Ford is the most expensive supermini here, but the three-door costs £15,145 – and the best things in life rarely come cheap.
