Electrify your senses with Alfa Romeo

Combining exhilarating power with plug-in hybrid efficiency, the Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 is a sparkling performer

Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4

When Alfa Romeo steps into the world of hybrids, the results are electric in more ways than one. For over 100 years, the Italian firm has made cars that stir the soul and redefine performance. Now it has created not only its first plug-in hybrid, but also a C-segment SUV with a true Milanese heart and the ability to excite driving passions.

An Italian heart

The heart of any Alfa Romeo is its powertrain, and the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 is no different. It offers a formidable 280hp, thanks to a sophisticated combination of a 1.3-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol engine producing 180hp and a 90kW electric motor that also musters 250Nm of torque. The real beauty of the setup is that the petrol engine powers the front wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the electric motor powers the rear wheels, making the vehicle four-wheel drive. The Q4 badge has signified a four-wheel drive Alfa Romeo for over 30 years, and the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 possesses all the traction and handling benefits of having both axles powered, but because there is no mechanical link between them the system saves weight and complexity over a traditional four-wheel drive setup.

The result is a car with sparkling performance, dispatching the zero to 62mph sprint in just 6.2 seconds and offering a top speed of 128mph. The top speed on battery power alone is a remarkable 84mph. The 15.5kWh battery can be fully charged in two and a half hours on a regular 7.4kW charger.  So replenished, it offers an electric only range of 38 miles*, more than enough for most commutes or a typical school run. With engine and electric motor working together the total range is up to 372 miles**

The Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 can emit as low as 0 g/km of CO2, enabling it to drive through zero emissions zones; with both elements of the powertrain working in harmony that figure rises to just 30-33g/km, meaning it falls into a low 12% BiK tax category.

Ignite your passion for driving

Alfa Romeo set out to redefine the C-SUV sector in terms of driving satisfaction when it designed the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4. Optimal weight distribution, front to rear, was the perfect start, followed by implementing McPherson strut front suspension with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) and a sophisticated multi-link rear axle setup. Combined with the most direct steering ratio in its class and dynamic torque vectoring, the Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 was born to be fun to drive.

The legendary Alfa Romeo DNA drive mode selector returns, but has been redesigned to enhance both performance and efficiency, adapting the engine, steering, suspension^ and responses of the Q4 system to tailor them to the prevailing driving conditions and driver’s mood. D is for Dynamic, where the electric motor and petrol engine work together to deliver maximum performance. N is for Natural, which optimises power while minimising consumption, and A is for Advanced Efficiency, which prioritises efficiency and particularly electric-only operation when charge is available. The Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 also benefits from advanced features such as regenerative braking, which converts the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electrical energy and uses it to charge the battery, and E-Save. The latter offers two modes: Passive, where the battery charge is maintained using the petrol engine, and Battery Charge, where one of three battery state levels can be chosen.
