New Hyundai Vision G concept previews future premium cars

Hyundai sets its stall out for Pebble Beach 2015, unveiling the Vision G premium coupe concept in LA

Hyundai has underlined its ambition to make a splash in the global premium car market by unveiling the Hyundai Vision G coupe concept at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California.

The Vision G is an elegant four-seat luxury coupe designed to showcase Hyundai's vision for its "family of future premium products". The car will make its public debut at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

At the Vision G's unveiling, Peter Schreyer, Hyundai's Chief Design Officer, explained that; “the design is our interpretation of the idea that Hyundai breathes into all of its vehicles – a DNA that balances design and performance with the idea that you don’t need to be over the top in terms of glitz and stereotypical luxury cues.”

The concept car is said to have been created around ideas of understatement, that you don't "need to shout to be noticed and respected". To that end, a number of high tech labour-saving features have been built-in, including automatic doors that swing open by themselves, as if helping occupants out of the car.

The Vision G's four-seater cabin is intended to deliver luxury without resorting to the usual luxury car stereotypes, garish materials or flashy design features. Light wood finishes mix with brushed aluminium, chrome and white leather. It's a stylish, minimalist approach similar to that which we've become accustomed to seeing in Volvo concepts over recent years.

In the engine bay things are a little more old-school, the Vision G relies on the latest version of Hyundai's 5.0-litre 'Tau' V8 with 420bhp at 6,000rpm. There's no fancy electric assistance for the new powertrain but high pressure direct injection, advanced injection mapping and a series of improvements to reduce noise vibration and harshness all feature.

The Hyundai Vision G will appear at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and we can expect to see its design cues filtering out onto Hyundai's next generation of large family cars in the future.
