Hyundai Grandeur saloon revived as retro electric concept car
The electrified Hyundai Grandeur gets the same LED pixel lights as Pony Coupe restomod, along with a modern touchscreen dashboard
It’s the Hyundai Grandeur’s 35th birthday this year so to celebrate, the Korean brand has given the saloon a futuristic makeover and a new electric powertrain.
The concept follows the same brief as the firm’s recent electrified restomod for the classic Pony coupe, assimilating modern technology with the car’s classic lines.
On the outside, Hyundai has swapped the 1980s saloon’s front and rear lamps for bang-up-to-date pixel LED units. There are also some new side mirrors, new body cladding, new wheels and a redesigned radiator grille which mimics the chequerboard pattern on the new lights.
While Hyundai’s the exterior tweaks are rather subtle, the Grandeur EV’s interior has had a thorough overhaul. The firm’s engineers retained the car’s retro steering wheel and dash, but the analogue clocks, radio and climate controls have been replaced with three screens.
The setup looks to be the same system found in the electric Hyundai Ioniq 5, sharing the same connected digital gauge cluster and infotainment system perched atop the dashboard.
Hyundai has also added a further screen in the centre console, which controls the car’s heating system and acts as an entertainment centre. The company’s images show the unit is available with a retro 80s piano application, too. The piano app (and any other music the driver wants to play) is piped through a new 18-speaker stereo system.
The seats are also new, and are upholstered in Burgundy velvet as a nod to the original Grandeur saloon. However, Hyundai has fitted the chairs with rather racy Nappa leather backs, which are held together with thick leather stitches.
Hyundai has also swapped the standard car’s gear selector with a jet aircraft-inspired replacement. There’s a new hidden compartment in the centre console, too, which the firm says is perfect for hiding valuables such as watches or, as illustrated by the firm’s images, a nice pair of cigars.
