Jaguar sculpture unveiled at Design Week
Clerkenwell Design Week debut for Jaguar-inspired art installation
A Jaguar-inspired sculpture has been unveiled at Clerkenwell Design Week. Created by students of the Royal College of Art, with assistance from Jaguar’s Advance Design Team, the artwork will be shown at Clerkenwell Design Week from 21st – 23rd May.
Jaguar is the main sponsor of Design Week, and approached both the Vehicle and Textile design departments of the Royal College of Art with a brief “to create a joint exterior and interior form study which expresses their vision of future Jaguar Design Language” for the event.
Both Jaguar Design Director, Ian Callum, and Jaguar Advanced Design Director, Julian Thomson are alumni of the RCA, hence the firm’s decision to involve them in the sculpture project.
Nine different design teams produced proposals for the artwork, with the sculpture of Ewan Gallimore and Claire Miller chosen as the winner.
The design bears a strong resemblance to the forthcoming F-Type Coupe, due in mid-2014, and was made using many of the technologies utilized in the design of Jaguar’s production cars.
Talking about the sculpture, Gallimore and Miller said, “Our form relates to the Jaguar brand through its sculptural volumes, bespoke materials and visual lightness.”
The students had just two weeks to create and present their proposals for the design. Those behind the winning artwork then travelled to Jaguar’s Advance Design team in Whitley, Coventry, to discuss how the sculpture would be manufactured.
Julian Thompson, Jaguar Advanced Design Director, said, “This has been a fantastic opportunity to challenge both ourselves and the students with a view on how expressive Jaguar design can become in the future.”
