2015 Jaguar XE helicopter ride over London

The British brand’s all-new baby saloon has already been spotted out and about in the capital. Not that the XE made its way to the launch venue via a conventional, road-going route. Our latest images reveal Jaguar decided to suspend its forthcoming BMW 3-Series rival beneath a helicopter and fly it to location late yesterday evening, the route taking it over the Thames from Canary Wharf and on to Tower Bridge and the Shard.

The compact executive saloon appears to have travelled undisguised, and despite the distance we can just about make out short front and rear overhangs, as well as the now familiar Jaguar ‘face’.

We first saw the front end a couple of months back, which in S trim features a deep front bumper with three wide air intakes, while the XJ-inspired grille is flanked by two narrow, angular headlights.

Under the metal, the XE will make use of Jag’s new ‘iQ Al’ aluminium platform, which will eventually find its way into the entire range in future, include an SUV due out in 2016.

Power will come from Jaguar Land Rover’s new Ingenium engine family, a range of 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains capable of CO2 emissions as low as 100g/km. Top-spec versions, meanwhile, will get the F-Type’s V6 3.0-litre supercharged engine, which offers either 335bhp or 375bhp.

A flagship, Special Vehicle Operations-tuned XE is also set to arrive in 2016, using the F-Type S roadster’s 5.0-litre V8 and capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in around four seconds. Costing around £60,000, Jaguar is set to fit a raft of performance upgrades in a bid to take the game to BMW’s M3.

The XE will hit Jaguar showrooms early in 2015, with prices likely to start around £27,000.
