New Land Rover Defender

Land Rover has just strengthened its line-up with a new Defender

The biggest player in the 4x4 market has just strengthened its line-up - with a new Defender! This is the updated version of Land Rover's most famous model, which comes with a host of improvements to performance and comfort.

On sale later this year, the revised Defender keeps the same classic shape as the 1949 Series-1 model. The only exterior change is the larger bonnet hump, giving a clue to the most significant improvement - a new 120bhp 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine. Replacing the ageing Td5, it offers considerably more torque - with 360Nm available from 2,000rpm - and better refinement. It's linked up to a new six-speed manual box.

Inside, there's a fresh Discovery-style dash, and seating has also been improved with a new rear bench which can be folded to increase load space. The Defender shouldn't rise much beyond its current £24,995 starting price. Meanwhile, the Range Rover Sport will be getting the firm's new 3.6-litre V8 turbodiesel.
