How to replace the crankshaft position sensor - pictures

If not using a ramp, jack the vehicle up and secure it on a suitable axle stand and remove the right-hand side front wheel.

<span>Once the front wheel has been removed, you can just make out the crank position sensor on the side of the engine.</span>
<span><span>Here is a close-up of the crankshaft position sensor, showing the black body with the harness plug mounted on top in the foreground.</span></span>

<span><span>For better access, pull the splash shield out of the wheel arch and use a small block of wood to hold it out enough to gain access.</span></span>
<span>Reach in and disconnect the wiring connector from the crank position sensor – press in the clip and pull the multi-plug off.</span>

<span>Once you have removed the multi-plug connector you can see the single bolt that secures the sensor to the side of the engine (behind connector).</span>
<span>Using an 8mm socket on a long extension bar, undo the retaining bolt that holds the Crankshaft Position Sensor in place.</span>

<span>Lift the CPS off, withdrawing its pin from the hole. You can now see how it fits – locating hole (upper), mounting post for the bolt (lower).</span>
<span>Here is the old sensor, lifted out and now clearly showing the hole for the retaining bolt. This is roughly the orientation on the engine.</span>

<span>Carefully fit the new CPS, positioning the pin on the CPS into the locating hole, and placing the bolt hole over the mounting post.</span>
<span style="font-size: 0.8125em;">Once the new CPS is correctly in position, refit the retaining bolt through the CPS and into the mounting post, tightening to 8Nm.</span>

<span>Once the CPS position and seating has been checked and the securing bolts tightened, reconnect the wiring connector multi-plug.</span>
<span>Remove the block of wood from the wheel arch splash shield, refit the road wheel and tighten to the correct torque setting.</span>
