8. Mercedes C-Class Estate
Buyers needing maximum practicality aren’t always prepared to compromise on style, and for these drivers the Mercedes C-Class Estate is perfect. It was facelifted in 2011, and looks great whether you go for the SE, AMG Sport or AMG Sport Plus models.
Engine options range from efficient yet gruff four-cylinder diesels to a powerful petrol V8 in the thrilling top-spec C63 AMG Estate. The V6 diesel in the C350 CDI Estate is smooth and muscular, but the 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesels provide the best fuel consumption, with up to 60.1mpg.
Just as important to many buyers will be the boot size: the C-Class Estate delivers 485 litres of space with five people on board and up to 1,500 litres with the rear seats down. Hooks and nets add to the boot’s practical appeal, as does an extra 12V socket back there. And all models come well equipped throughout, with dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and a USB socket.
The C-Class also has decent towing capacity, although high insurance group ratings will hit drivers hard in the pocket.
