New Peugeot 3008 revealed with all-electric power to take on the VW ID.4

The third-generation Peugeot 3008 gets sporty styling and an all-electric powertrain in E-3008 form, but a PHEV will follow

The Peugeot 3008 underwent a revolution for its second generation, morphing from a dowdy MPV to a stylish SUV. But for the all-new Mk3 Peugeot 3008, the French manufacturer has chosen evolution – when it comes to styling at least.

Based on the all-new “EV native” STLA M platform from Peugeot’s parent, Stellantis, the latest 3008 has a design that’s more coupé-like than ever, with a sloping roofline at the rear that gives a sportier look – necessary due to the need for aerodynamic efficiency to maximise the E-3008’s range. It's due on sale at the start of 2024.

A plug-in hybrid powertrain will also be offered, but Peugeot is focusing on the all-electric variant of its new car, with two battery options initially. The entry-level model will be powered by a 73kWh pack supplying a front-mounted electric motor, which produces 207bhp and 343Nm of torque.

Peugeot claims up to 326 miles of range, but this rises to 435 miles for the 98kWh model. This version is also equipped with a more potent motor, rated at 227bhp and 343Nm. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive option will also be offered, with 315bhp and 509Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds; the single motor car will take 8.7 seconds, with the Long Range model taking two tenths of a second longer.

Charging is up to 160kW, which will allow a 20-80 per cent top-up in less than 30 minutes for the 98kWh model.

There are three levels of brake regeneration to help top up the battery on the move. These are selectable via steering wheel-mounted paddles, with the last two modes supplying enough force to activate the brake lights; the top setting allows for “almost” one-pedal driving.

The quest for range and efficiency with the new E-3008 has been reflected in the car’s sleek shape to help reduce drag (this new car’s drag coefficient is down to 0.28Cd). It also features sharper styling cues, such as the brand’s three-claw LED running light signature at the front and rear, even crisper lines and more solid surfaces, some flush glazing and funky wheel designs.

Despite the almost coupé-SUV look, Peugeot claims that the new car offers the same 520-litre boot space as the previous-generation 3008. We sat in the car ahead of the E-3008’s official unveiling and even in the rear, headroom was fine, with plenty of legroom too. There’s also lots of room up front, with the E-3008 featuring a new dash layout and upgraded infotainment.

A one-piece, gently curved 21-inch screen takes care of the driver and infotainment displays, with Peugeot’s latest panoramic i-Cockpit set-up sitting above a dash panel covered in fabric, evolving the previous 3008’s look.

The multimedia system features the now familiar i-Toggle touch panel beneath the main screen, but unlike cars such as the 308 and 408, the E-3008 has up to 10 configurable icons over two pages; users swipe left and right to find what they want.

There are plenty of features, including configurable LED ambient lighting, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Peugeot’s voice-activated personal assistant. There’s also an app store as part of the set-up, with users able to pre-condition the climate control, schedule battery charging and check e-routing via Peugeot’s own app.

The car’s drive selector has been moved from the centre console to the dashboard to allow for more storage space, including a big, hinged-lid bin. The new model also features vehicle-to-load capability for powering outdoor items or charging gadgets with a three-pin plug.

Two trim levels will be offered, starting with Allure. This features half-leather effect, half-fabric trim (much of it made from recycled materials, making up the 500kg in total of green materials used in the new 3008), full keyless go, a high-definition rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, LED headlights and 19-inch alloy wheels, amongst other equipment.

Stepping up to GT adds a two-tone paint job with a contrast black roof, Alcantara trim, 20-inch wheels, pixel LED headlights, front parking sensors, a powered tailgate, wireless smartphone charging, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, while massage seats will be an option.

As you’d expect, the new platform and the E-3008 offer the latest in safety and driver-assistance tech. This includes semi-autonomous adaptive cruise with lane keep and lane-change assist, autonomous emergency braking, long-range blindspot warning and lane-departure correction.

Prices have not yet been outlined, but expect a significant hike over the outgoing model’s £32,780 starting price. The new E-3008 will rival EVs such as the VW ID.4, which is priced from £40,275, with the Peugeot set to go on sale in February 2024.
