Michelin Primacy 4+ review
For a tyre that is focused on performance when it is worn, the Primacy 4+ performed pretty well from new, with a good all-round balance
Just like the Hankook, this Michelin arrived in 2022 with a focus on durability, which is hard to achieve alongside wet-weather performance. In our mini test this year, it delivered a very similar performance compared with the Continental.
This tyre also aims to negate the drop-off in wet performance as the tread wears, thanks to a second layer of rubber compound to deal with reduced water clearing from the smaller channels.
Testing it in as-new condition may not have played to its strengths, but it finished third best in the wet tests. This was helped by another performance target for the 4+: ‘best aquaplaning control’. The only blot on its wet performance was last place for wet cornering, but the margins were small. On the handling track, it was one of the sharpest after the Continental, with good front grip and letting us get on the power early.
Dry grip was a different story, but, again, the margins were small. It needed nearly two metres more to stop than the PremiumContact and was less than half a second off the winner’s handling lap time. The rolling resistance result is skewed by the Bridgestone, but this former fuel-efficiency champ finished just off the podium, in fourth.
