Vredestein Quatrac review

The Vredestein shines in the snow, but is so-so elsewhere

  • Score: 97.5%
  • Ranking: 6th
  • Price: £92

The Vredestein ends up sixth partly because its performance is biased towards snow at the expense of wet and dry conditions. It bagged a trio of podium positions on the snow, topped by first place on the handling circuit, where it felt excellent, with a great balance, effortless adjustability and a degree of precision that inspired huge confidence.

It was much less impressive in the wet, finishing sixth in every test. Its premium rivals were mostly within half a metre of each other in wet braking, but the Vredestein was 1.6m off, and it returned a similar result on the wet circle. In aquaplaning it was fair in a straight line but off the pace in the curved test; and while it was sixth around the wet handling circuit, just under 2.5sec off the best, over the lap it felt good – positive with decent grip and balance, held back in part by slightly weaker traction.

In dry braking it was in the mid-range pack and although it was slowest of all around the handling circuit it was within a second of the best and was neat and predictable. It was competitive for cabin noise and the second most economical of the all-season tyres but its overall balance seems tailored for regions that get more snow than the UK, which is where we expect it would really come into its own.

We say:

“A good all-season tyre that prioritises snowy conditions over wet and dry performance.”

Blackcircles.com says:

“Customers rate this tyre as 4.5/5 overall and think it’s good value for money.”
