Renault ZOE - best tax-free cars
Our pick: ZOE Expression Nav R90
CO2: 0g/km
List price: £18,495
Based on the Renault Clio, the ZOE is one of the cheapest options here, but even so it manages to combine a spacious and well equipped interior with a comfortable and relaxing ride. From behind the wheel at least it feels more like a traditional supermini, although the impracticalities of a limited range and under-resourced recharging infrastructure inevitably take their toll.
It’s the fourth electric car from Renault and the best yet after the disappointing Fluence and niche Twizy. Owners love it, ranking the ZOE a fine second in our Driver Power 2016 satisfaction survey thanks to its ease of driving and running costs. It went on sale in 2013, but a 2016 update hiked the range to 180 miles from the 44kWh batteries (or 100 miles with the 22kWh version). Take those figures with a pinch of salt though, as you would with any electric car: the range drops when the weather isn’t favourable, in cold conditions especially.
