New SEAT Tarraco FR PHEV performance hybrid set for 2020 launch
SEAT’s Tarraco large SUV has received a new 242bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain and a fresh, sporty FR trim-level
SEAT has launched a new plug-in hybrid powertrain and a new sports-inspired FR trim level for the Tarraco SUV at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new combination will go on sale in 2020 but SEAT says buyers can spec the Tarraco’s PHEV drivetrain independently of the new trim level and vice-versa.
The Tarraco’s new plug-in hybrid powertrain forms part of SEAT’s electrification strategy, which aims to introduce six all-electric and PHEV models before 2021. The system comprises a 148bhp turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, a 113bhp electric motor and a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Total system output stands at 242bhp and 400Nm of torque, which SEAT claims will provide the Tarraco with a 0–62mph time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 135mph. SEAT also says that the powertrain offers “more than 30 miles” of pure-electric driving range and that its CO2 emissions stand at 50g/km, on the WLTP cycle.
SEAT’s new FR trim level gives the Tarraco a substantial exterior redesign. Buyers get a set of wider wheel arches, a larger rear spoiler, a unique grille and a new full-width rear light bar. A set of unique 19-inch alloy wheels are also fitted as standard, although owners can opt for larger 20-inch units should they prefer.
Inside, the Tarraco FR features a 9.2-inch infotainment system, an FR-branded sports steering wheel, a set of aluminium pedals and a pair of faux-leather-trimmed electrically adjustable sports seats. Buyers can also spec trailer assist and SEAT’s new Parking Heater system, which warms the SUV’s engine and interior faster in cold weather.
Production commences in 2020, while prices and a full specification for the powertrain and the trim level will be released after the Frankfurt show.
