New 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR: full pricing and specs

The 286bhp Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR is on sale now, with prices starting from £34,135

Order books for the new Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR have opened. The German brand’s new GTI range-topping hot hatch comes with a host of styling, performance and technology upgrades over the standard Golf GTI Performance, with prices starting from £34,135.

Naturally, the TCR receives a hike in power over the Performance Pack GTI. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot has been reworked to produce 286bhp, compared to the standard GTI’s 242bhp. The torque figure is increased by 10Nm to 380Nm and, thanks to an optional speed limiter removal, the top speed rises from 155mph to 164mph.

The TCR’s engine sends its power to the front wheels through a seven speed dual-clutch gearbox with a locking differential. Thanks to the extra power, Volkswagen claims the TCR will sprint from 0–62mph in 5.6 seconds; another improvement over the standard GTI’s 6.2 seconds.

Subtle styling tweaks set the TCR apart from lesser GTI models. Updates include a deeper front splitter, larger side skirts, a more aggressive rear diffuser, a range of “TCR” badging, matte black door mirrors, a new rear wing and TCR-branded puddle lights.

Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, perforated disc brakes on all four wheels, a leather multifunction steering wheel and Alcantara trim for the sports seats, door cards and gear-lever gaiter.

For £2,000 extra, buyers can opt for a “Performance” version of the TCR. The option pack removes the standard TCR’s speed-limiter and adds lowered suspension, VW’s Dynamic Chassis Control, adaptive dampers, 19-inch alloy wheels and a larger set of drilled brake discs with uprated calipers and pads.
