Petrol power added to Volkswagen Passat range
VW's Passat family car gets 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0 TSI power, while VW adds more petrol engines to Tiguan range, too
The Volkswagen Passat is now available to order in the UK with petrol engine options. Until now, VW has offered diesel power in its family saloon and estate, while the only petrol version has been the expensive Passat GTE plug-in hybrid. But now the rest of the range is getting petrol power, as VW has introduced its 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI four-cylinder engines to the range.
The 1.4 TSI comes in 125PS and 150PS forms, making 123bhp and 148bhp respectively, while the latter features Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) that shuts down two cylinders under light loads to boost fuel consumption. Both models come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while VW's seven-speed DSG automatic is available as an option on both cars. The 1.4 TSI is offered across the Passat range, including sporty R-Line trim for the first time.
Further up the range, there's a 1.8 TSI 180PS with 178bhp and the 2.0 TSI 220PS that makes 217bhp. The 1.8 TSI is offered with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG auto, while a six-speed DSG auto gearbox is standard on the 2.0-litre engine. These two engines are only available in GT and R-Line trims.
Prices for the petrol Passat models are around £1,900 less than they are for the equivalent diesels, while all engines are offered in saloon and estate body styles. The petrol range is available to order now, with prices ranging from £21,610 for the 1.4 TSI 125PS S saloon, to £34,255 for the 2.0 TSI 220PS DSG R-Line estate.
The petrol engine range is designed to be attractive to business users, too. The 1.4 TSI 150PS SE manual has a Benefit In Kind tax rate that will see higher rate business users save around £866 over three years when compared to the 2.0 TDI 150PS in the same spec.
Elsewhere, the Tiguan is gaining more petrol engines, with the 1.4 TSI 125PS now offered in SE and SE Nav trims, while the 1.4 TSI 150PS model with ACT and DSG gearbox is now available in SEL and R-Line specs, creating a new entry point to these higher-spec variants.
All of these new models are available to order now, and we will review the new petrol models as soon as we can.
