Volkswagen Polo - best small cars
The Polo stands out as a supermini thanks to its all-round abilities
Our pick: 1.2 TSI Match 5dr
The VW Polo has always delivered reasonable running costs, great build quality and terrific practicality, and the latest version adds an extra slice of desirability thanks to a cabin upgrade that even basic models get a five-inch touchscreen, with Bluetooth, USB and DAB radio on the standard spec-sheet too. Upgrade to higher-spec models for a 6.5-inch touchscreen that ‘swipes’ like a smartphone.
The interior really does give the Polo the feel of a car in the class above, yet impressive fuel economy figures are the icing on the cake that will remind you you’re still firmly in supermini territory.
You can get a 1.0-litre three-cylinder Polo with 59bhp or 74bhp if you’re really economising, but the 1.2-litre TSI with 89bhp is our recommendation. Other options include a diesels, a sporty GTI hot hatch and the petrol BlueMotion eco-warrior with 94bhp and up to 68.9mpg.
With a practical cabin, pleasant driving characteristics and a five-star Euro NCAP rating, the Polo is truly a great all-rounder in the supermini sector.
