Ford E-Transit Custom

The 2024 Auto Express Electric Van of the Year is the new Ford E-Transit Custom, an all-electric version of one of our favourite vans on the market. With its excellent driving characteristics, useable range, large cargo volume and high specification, it’s the electric van that gets the job done every time, whatever the task.

Enjoy driving for work

Just because you’re using your vehicle for work, why should you not enjoy the drive? The Ford E-Transit Custom stands out by offering a truly car-like driving experience. Our testers love the way it drives, citing a comfortable ride, and low levels of wind noise and road roar from the tyres. Equipped with a 65kWh battery and a choice of 134 or 215 bhp, it offers superb acceleration just when you need it. And with the Sport model offering 218bhp, and the MS-RT even more power at 282bhp, there’s a E-Transit Custom to suit all performance demands.

The E-Transit Custom is powered by a 65kWh battery that gives a driving range of up to 209 miles*. That’s enough for the majority of journeys, but it’s reassuring to know that charging from 10-80% on a 125kW fast charger only takes 39 minutes*. Hook the E-Transit Custom up to your home wall box and it’ll charge to 100% overnight in 8.5 hours, meaning you’re ready to go again in the morning.

Space to get the job done

While the Ford E-Transit Custom is an enthralling drive, there’s also no compromise on the kind of attributes that have made the Transit Custom one of the nation’s favourite vans. With a load volume of 5.8-6.8 cu.meters it’s among the best in class, and offers the same load capacity as the diesel-powered version. There’s a maximum payload rating of up to 1,088kg, and an impressive 2,300kg of towing capacity with a braked trailer.

The E-Transit Custom is available in a range of body styles, allowing you to select the capability that best fits your business. The first choice is whether to opt for the standard or long wheelbase version, while Ford has cleverly engineered a sub-2.0 metre overall height which means it can be parked in most underground car parks without issue.

The panel van variety is supplemented by the option of a Double Cab-In-Van that can be specified as either a six or seven seat configuration, with a separate load area behind a rear bulkhead. There’s also the all-new Multicab option with a split length load area, offering an additional pair of seats with the practicality of a full length section to the load bay. Finally, there’s the Kombi variant, with seating for up to nine people.

The E-Transit Custom is available in Trend, Limited, Sport and MS-RT series. All versions are generously equipped with items such as the latest SYNC4 infotainment system and the Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist suite of active safety systems, and even an optional heat pump to help reduce the impact of colder temperatures on overall range. Investing in the optional Pro Power Onboard technology could be a smart move for your business too, providing a portable plug-in power source for your work tools, laptop or printer. With up to 2.3kW of power to run equipment from your van, it brings complete flexibility on the go and on site.

Advanced Technology at your fingertips

With its car-like driving attributes and remarkably plush interior, the E-Transit Custom lends itself to a high equipment specification, and that’s exactly what every model in the range offers. The sophisticated infotainment system is accessed via a 13-inch touch screen mounted in the centre of the dashboard, and includes a 5G modem, seamless smartphone integration (including Apple Carplay and Android Auto) and conversational voice recognition. Further advanced technology to assist in whatever task is at hand includes a colour rear view camera for enhanced visibility, and the Ford Pro E-Telematics service, complementary for 12 months, which helps fleet owners to optimise their business through connected vehicle data.

Ford is proud of the Euro NCAP Platinum rating the E-Transit Custom has secured, in part thanks to its comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies. Included as standard across the range, from the Trend model upwards is pre-collision assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, road sign recognition, wrong way alert, a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors. This is a van that looks after you, leaving you stress-free to concentrate on the real job.
