BEST BUY Precise positioning of the filament explains the performance of the plus 100 per cent X-tremeVision. Every bulb is inspected, which is why it’s so pricey. But it pays off, with a bright hot spot nearly 75 metres away.

RECOMMENDED Excellent performance from Alite-made plus 90s. It produced a good hot spot with no dark areas at 75 metres. Consistency could have been better, but both bulbs had well defined glare cut-offs.

Beam rating: 105

New up to 120 per cent Halfords bulb pushes the boundaries. It was more consistent than Halfords’ Extreme, although it trailed slightly on performance. Even better, the bulbs were on a buy one, get one free offer when we conducted our test.
Osram Nightbreaker Plus
Price: £27.50
Beam rating: 86
Rating: ★★★

Flagship Osram plus 90s have a whiter light, and are cheaper than rivals, but also a long way behind. A pale blue band controls the light output, which doesn’t help at 75 metres. Glare cut-off could have been sharper, but samples were consistent.
