Audi TT
Why it won...
It’s rare for a car to be recognised as an artistic achievement, but such is the quality of the latest TT that it is on the verge of becoming a modern design classic. When it picked up the Best Coupé award last year, we wondered what more the super-cool Audi could offer. Far from resting on its laurels, though, the manufacturer has risen to the challenge of making the TT truly unbeatable – by extending the line-up with a sizzling new five-cylinder turbo RS model.
No matter which version you choose, though, this car makes you feel special. Our award goes to the specific talents of the Coupé, which also offers genuine versatility to motorists who need back seats only for occasional use. The large tailgate gives decent access to the surprisingly spacious 290-litre luggage area – who says coupés aren’t practical for everyday driving?
Where the latest TT really excels compared to its now-legendary predecessor is out on the road. With sharper steering, greater agility and a real enthusiasm for cornering, it is designed to be as engaging to drive as it is to look at.
And that’s what’s helped the Audi fight off the competition from BMW and VW. With a string of successes behind it, the TT looks to be established as a symbol of fine car design for years to come.
Commended
BMW 3-Series coupe
with a rear-wheel-drive chassis, great handling and superb engines, the 3-Series Coupé sticks to a formula that has been familiar to BMW fans for decades. Its winning combination proves irresistible to many drivers. If only it stood out from the crowd more, the two-door 3 might have toppled the TT.
VW Scirocco
Great value, great fun and great looking, the Scirocco very nearly stole our hearts in this class. However, in the end what held it back was the fact it lacks the special feeling you should get behind the wheel of any coupé. With a blunt, upright rear screen, the two-door Volkswagen feels more like a one-off hot hatch than a true coupé – although that will make it all the more appealing for many.
