Best for practicality

Which car offers the best versatility. We ‘throw it all in and go’ to find out.

One model has more ‘throw it all in and go’ ability than any other! For the second year, the Land Rover Discovery 3 tops the practicality chart.

[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"content_narrow","fid":"79280","attributes":{"class":"media-image"}}]] It’s no great surprise given the SUV’s vast dimensions, but the seven-seat cabin offers loads of space. There’s a split tailgate, which is the perfect platform for muddy shoes or muddy dogs, while owners know they’ll never get stuck, whatever the terrain – which only adds to its versatility.

Practical cars come in all shapes and sizes, though – our runner-up is Honda’s MkI Jazz. It redefined space efficiency in a small car, and even eclipses the second generation, which comes fourth.

The bottom of this chart will bring red faces at MINI. You say the only model less practical than the MkI three-door is the MkII!

The winners

1. Land Rover Discovery 3“A fantastic load-lugger, people mover, off-road toy; at home on the motorway, A-roads, B-roads and dirt tracks, looks fantastic when clean and even better when dirty!" Mr Andy Wilson, Brough, North Humberside 2. Honda Jazz (old)“Reliable but a bit boring! Very solid and well-built with excellent folding seats feature that give lots of space and a flat platform. Very practical.” Mr Jeff Hanson, Simonstone, Lancashire 3. Volvo V70 (old) “Exactly what we thought we would get from a Volvo. Highly practical, loads of room and excellent performance for such a big car.” Mr Dan Gill, Lincoln.
