Corvette ZR1

You only have to look at the figures to see what kind of performance car the ZR1 is. In the three years we’ve been using the 1.2-mile Anglesey track, only two of the 60 models we’ve tested have completed a lap in less than a minute.

In 2008, Porsche’s GT2 set the record at 59.8 seconds, and this year the most powerful production Corvette ever achieved a time of 59.9 seconds. The US monster has a 6.2-litre V8 that, with the help of a supercharger, gives 638bhp and 819Nm of torque. This propels the ZR1 from 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds – and the explosion of noise and acceleration as the supercharger kicks in has to be felt to be believed.

Unsurprisingly, this kind of pace needs to be treated with respect on the road; the huge, left-hand-drive-only ’Vette is a challenge on narrow British lanes. On the track, practical issues and the cheap interior disappear to the back of your mind as you struggle to take in just how fast this car is. As with the Audi R8 featured further on in our countdown, it has magnetic dampers that tighten up the reactions, plus standard ceramic brakes. Neither is perfect; both are essential.

Like all Corvettes, the ZR1 turns in well and its vast tyres ensure decent grip. But darty steering, a heavy gearchange and a lively tail require skill to master. This hard edge is part of the charm. The ZR1 is compromised and costs a crazy £106,000 – but it’s the epitome of the muscle car.
