Mercedes E63 AMG

FEW firms can match AMG for performance car heritage. The famous tuning brand has been producing musclebound Mercedes models for decades, but 2010 has been one of its best years yet. Not only has it pulled the wraps off its jaw-dropping SLS supercar, it has also launched the scorching E63 saloon. With searing pace, a bellowing soundtrack and agile chassis, the four-door machine scores a well deserved top 10 finish in our shoot-out.

Despite its sober looks, the E63 is clearly related to its glamorous gullwing stablemate. Twist the key in the ignition, and the 518bhp 6.2-litre V8 engine erupts loudly into life before settling down to a burbling idle.

Slot the stubby gear selector into drive, squeeze the aluminium throttle pedal and the E63 catapults off the line with neck-snapping ferocity. The big V8 unit revs to nearly 7,000rpm, and emits a spinetingling NASCAR crackle when you get near the red line.

However, unlike previous AMG models, the latest E-Class manages to combine its sledgehammer pace with surprising sophistication. Beautifully weighted and accurate steering makes it easy to place the Mercedes on track, while three-stage adaptive dampers help keep the car composed during enthusiastic cornering. Adding to the car’s appeal is plenty of feedback from all the major controls.

But don’t for one moment think that the German brand has forgotten about its unruly side. Disengage the ESP and the rear-wheel-drive AMG will indulge in long power slides, with only the slightest provocation from your right foot. Switch the electronic safety nets back on, select the softest suspension setting and the E63 is instantly transformed into a comfortable, refined and spacious cruiser. At £71,900, it doesn’t come cheap, but few performance cars can match the AMG’s ability to mix supercar performance, entertaining driving dynamics and family-friendly practicality.
