Peugeot RCZ THP 200
What a year it’s been for the Peugeot RCZ! Not only did it win the Best Coupé prize and Design Award at Auto Express’s New Car Awards 2010 (Issue 1,126), but it has now put on a giant-killing display to secure a top four place in our performance rundown.
After years in the wilderness, the French firm is back on form with its latest offering. Thanks to its agile chassis, keen engine and great value price, the sleek RCZ is the long-awaited spiritual successor to the famous 205 GTi hot hatch of the Eighties.
Under the skin, the range-topping 200TH P model gets a number of tweaks to help sharpen its responses, including a strengthened front subframe and wider wheel hubs. From the driver’s seat, you’ll also notice the smaller-diameter steering wheel and short-shift gearlever. And as soon as you’re up and running, you’ll be left in no doubt about the Peugeot’s sporting credentials. It responds instantly to every turn of the chunky steering wheel, darting through corners with great agility.
Strong front-end grip inspires confidence, while excellent body control means the RCZ isn’t upset by bumpy surfaces. Adding to the appeal is a punchy 1.6-litre engine. With 200bhp on tap, the turbo unit isn’t short of straight-line pace, and has a raspy exhaust note. Completing the polished dynamic package are the slick gearshift and powerful, progressive brakes.
And when you’ve finished enjoying the driving experience, you can stand back and admire the RCZ’s glorious exterior. It looks even better when you consider the bargain price! It’s easy to see why the Peugeot finishes ahead of more expensive and exotic machinery. The Lion is ready to roar again...
