Few cars can match the TT for classy design and ice-cool image. Better still, the rakish German coupé is beautifully built, surprisingly practical and great to drive. So if you hanker after a stylish set of wheels that’s as comfortable at the race track as it is parked outside the Ritz, then look no further.

Now in its second generation, the TT is more desirable than ever, with buyers clamouring for used examples of the head-turning machine. However, despite strong demand, there is plenty to choose from at our £20,000 budget.

Unfortunately, the extremely rapid S and RS models are out of reach at this price. Yet for most owners the entry-level 2.0-litre TFSI will be all the TT you ever need. The smooth and punchy 197bhp turbo blasts from 0-60mph in a hot hatch-rivalling 6.6 seconds, while the front-wheel-drive chassis has plenty of poise and agility. You can choose from plenty of 2007 57-plate models with only 25,000 miles on the clock. The same amount of cash buys a roadster of similar age and mileage – meaning there’s no financial penalty for wind-in-the-hair thrills.

If you fancy a little more performance, then the 238bhp 3.2-litre V6 variant should fit the bill. Equipped as standard with Audi’s trademark quattro four-wheel-drive system, it serves up strong all-weather pace. Our budget should also stretch to higher mileage examples of the economical
